Mercedes boys thrive at own meet

MERCEDES — The Mercedes boys cross country team made sure on Saturday that no one was going to show them up at their own meet.

At the Mercedes Cross Country Meet, the Tigers had five runners place in the top 10 to easily win the boys individual title with 33 points.

Brownsville Rivera, which was led by first-place finisher Christian Machura, came in second with 53 points, and Brownsville Hanna finished in third with 104 total points.

The day belonged to the Tigers, however, as they had runners finish in second, sixth, seventh, eighth and 10th place.

Matthew Peynado came in second with a time of 16:54, Manuel Gonzalez in sixth at 17:06, Jonathan Reyes in seventh at 17:09, Dominic Cavazos in eighth at 17:23 and Victor Gonzalez in 10th at 17:30.

On the girls side, Brownsville Hanna had two runners finish in the top 10 to win the girls individual title with 54 points. Sharyland, which was led by gold medalist Anita Hernandez, came in second with 70 points and Los Fresnos came in third with 111 points. Harlingen High had to settle for fourth place with 130 points.

Hanna had two runners finish in the top 10 and six in the top 20.

The Lady Eagles were led by Mariana Sanchez, who came in second with a time of 20:20, and Naomi Lucio, who finished third at 20:28.
