PSJA Memorial rallies for win over Edinburg Economedes

KRISTIAN LIMAS | SPECIAL TO THE MONITOR

The PSJA Memorial Wolverines came out slowly, falling behind by 14 early in the first half, but they roared back to life with 34 unanswered points on their way to a 34-14 win Friday night at PSJA Memorial Stadium.

Running back Jonathan Trevino ended the night with 148 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, helping propel the Wolverines to the win.

“We got them tired going into the second half,” Trevino said. “So we started running the ball more, and it worked out.”

Early on, though, it seemed as if it was going to be a long night for Memorial. The Jaguars wasted no time getting on the board as they marched down the field on an eight-play drive capped by a 2-yard punch in from Allen Arredondo to make it 7-0 Economedes. They would strike again early in the second quarter, when Doroteo Arreola ran it in from 6 yards out to make it 14-0.

Economedes was able to move with impunity throughout most of the first half, while the Wolverines struggled to get their offense rolling. The Jaguars racked up 198 yards in the first half while Memorial was held to just 121.

Despite the slow start, the Wolverines offense found its rhythm as the half went on. After a fumble got them prime field position, they went on a four-play drive that culminated in a three-yard run by Trevino to make it 14-7.

Another turnover off an interception by Vicente Rodriguez got the Wolverines deep in Jaguar territory. Memorial quarterback Michael Gonzalez connected with Jay Bocanegra on a 22-yard strike to make it 14-13. The extra point was blocked.

That point didn’t seem to matter, as Trevino forced his way down the field on a 67-yard drive exclusively by him that made the score 19-14.

The Wolverines defense also played a large role in the comeback, as a key interception by Abram Alaniz once again put Memorial in prime territory. From there, a 33-yard run by Trevino and a 2-yard keeper by quarterback Michael Gonzalez made it 27-14. Gonzalez would break free for a 49-yard run later in the four to cap the scoring at 34-14.

“We made some adjustments with our defensive personnel,” Wolverines head coach Gus Cavazos said. “We had some guys out so we tried moving people around, and it didn’t work, so we went back to what we had been doing. Once we got the right personnel in there, we did a lot better.”
