STAFF REPORTS

The Port Isabel Tarpons rebounded from last week’s loss with a 42-24 win over the Corpus Christi West Oso Bears on Friday night in Corpus Christi .

The Tarpons (7-1, 2-1 in District 16-4A Division II) spread the wealth in the scoring department and did so in multiple ways. Quarterback Trey Mock threw two touchdowns, one apiece to Alex Cisneros and Marco Colorado. Colorado also added a score on a reverse to go along with teammate J.J. Gonzalez’s two rushing TDs.

Dylan Athanas contributed on the defensive side, stripping a Bears player of the football, scooping it up and finding the end zone.

“We came out a little flat, but we woke up in the second quarter,” P.I. coach Monty Stumbaugh said. “We played hard but we’ve still got to eliminate the mistakes.”

Friday’s win over Corpus Christi West Oso(1-7, 0-3) is enough to secure a playoff berth for the Tarpons.

AUSTIN ST. MICHAEL’S 52, ST.JOSEPH ACADEMY 18

AUSTIN — The Bloodhounds’ high-powered offense struggled to get going until halftime, but it was too late as St. Joseph Academy lost to Austin St. Michael in a TAPPS district matchup at Crusader Stadium.

After the Crusaders began the game by returning the opening kickoff, they amassed 31 points and their defense held the Bloodhounds scoreless before halftime.

“We came out flat and got out of rhythm,” St. Josephcoach Christian Putegnat said. “We had a difficult time getting back into it.”

St. Joseph made some adjustments at halftime and got on the board. Mario Garcia scored two touchdowns on the ground and Kai Money added another for the Bloodhounds during the second half.

“We finally started moving the ball, but at that point it was too late,” Putegnat said. “The kids picked it up at times, but we were already behind. We kind of fell apart (tonight).”

Putegnat was at a loss as to why his team played the way it did.

“That’s the million dollar question. If I knew that answer, I would feel a lot better,” he said. “I don’t know if it was a long trip or what, but no excuses. We should have played better than we played, and we didn’t.

“We have a lot of work to do.”
