Edinburg Vela tops Valley View to win third straight game

Edinburg Vela played one of its best defensive games of the season, recovering six turnovers while the ground game did its part as the SaberCats posted a 49-14 victory over Valley View on Thursday at Cats Stadium in Edinburg.

Vela (7-1, 3-1) won its third consecutive district game, picking up five interceptions and recovering a fumble.

“The defense really helped us and provided a spark for us,” SaberCats coach Michael Salinas said.

Robert Guerra, who scored on a 92-yard run, got hot early in the ground game. Anthony Arredondo, the team’s second-most productive back, carried the load in the second half. Both entered the game having rushed for eight touchdowns.

Eddie Luna also hauled in an 80-yard scoring reception from Ebher Lopez, the District 31-5A leader in touchdown passes with 20.

Vela, the No. 4-ranked team is the latest RGVSports.com top 10 poll, has bounced back nicely since a 27-24 loss to Sharyland High in the district opener, putting together the the longest winning streak in district so far this season.

“I think our kids are excited about where we are as a program,” Salinas said. “We understand we have to continue to work and improve every week.”

With the loss, Valley View dropped to 1-6 overall, 1-2 in district, coming off its first victory of the season last week.

The SaberCats will turn their attention to Rio Grande City (3-4, 1-2) next week. The Rattlers are coming off a 14-13 loss to a Valley View in Week 7.
