Crunch time for Lady Tarpons

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The Port Isabel Lady Tarpons got off to a hot start in District 32-4A competition.

They came out of the gate with a 6-0 record and looked as though they would have the top spot locked up as the first half of the regular season came to a close.

Since the hot start, P.I. has faded a bit and gone 2-2 during its past four matches. The La Feria Lionettes and the Zapata Lady Hawks have been close to the Lady Tarpons in the standings all season, and a slight slip by P.I. could compromise the top seed.

Port Isabel coach Julie Breedlove still thinks her team has what it takes to come out on top.

“Right now we’re going to have to win out (in order to secure the top spot),” she said. “The other thing is,we’re going to have to come together as a team. We’re really going to have to start pushing each other, getting behind each other and filling that trust with each other.”

ON A RUN

With Tuesday’s win over the San Benito Lady Greyhounds, the Harlingen High Lady Cardinals have pulled into a tie with the Hanna Lady Golden Eagles for third place in District 32-6A.

Harlingen High started off slow with a 1-4 record to begin the season but has since come on strong to push for the No. 3 seed in a tight race, winning five straight matches.

Adjustments in her rotation combined with her team’s refusal to waver from the goal of making the postseason put the Lady Cardinals on track.

“They haven’t stopped believing,” coachJennifer Martinez said. “This team will do whatever it takes to make the playoffs. We’ve kept working and this team hasn’t given up.”

Harlingen High will look to keep its winning streak alive as the Lady Cardinals play host to the undefeated Los Fresnos Lady Falcons at noon Saturday.

Los Fresnos is an amazing team,” Martinez said. “But I believe any team can be beat.”
