At Edinburg, previously 1-5 Edinburg High pulled off an upset against PSJA Memorial with a big 17-7 win on Friday night.

John Murillo caught a touchdown, Armando Palacios ran one in, and the Bobcats were able to control the game at the line of scrimmage to move to 2-5 and 1-2 in District 31-6A.

“I know people don’t believe in us, and that’s OK,” coach Joaquin Escobar said. “After last week’s game (a 30-14 loss to Edinburg North), I knew after the way we played, we had a little more confidence.”

PSJA Memorial falls to 4-4, 2-2 in district.

PSJA NORTH 37, EDINBURG ECONOMEDES 28: At Pharr, PSJA North overcame a 21-7 deficit to defeat Economedes. With the win, North moves to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in District 31-6A — good for sole possession of first place.

Economedes drops to 2-5 and 0-3 in district.

McALLEN HIGH 41, LA JOYA JUAREZ-LINCOLN 6: At McAllen, McHi continued its undefeated start to district play with a rout against La Joya Juarez-Lincoln. In four district games, McAllen High has outscored its opponents 193-34. The Bulldogs are 6-2 overall.

MISSION VETERANS 33, SHARYLAND PIONEER 19: At Mission, sophomore Diego Hernandez started again at quarterback in place of Santos Villarreal (sprained ankle) and led the Patriots to their second straight victory.

“Everything’s good,” Mission Vets coach David Gilpin said. “To go 2-0 without Santos, hey, I’m happy for that. That means our kids are stepping up. Diego’s playing well. There ain’t no easy wins out there. To be sitting there with Santos on the bench and to still be able to win, it speaks volumes not only of our kids but our coaching staff.

“They’ve done a good job of preparing everybody, not just the starters, to the point where we could put backups in the game and they could get the job done.”

The seventh-ranked Patriots improved to 5-2 overall, 2-1 in district in beating a first-year Diamondbacks team (3-5, 1-3).

“Pioneer played a good game,” Gilpin said. “They kept battling; they were a tough team to play. Give them credit, they’re going to be good in the future. Also give our kids credit. They’re finding a way to win.”

LOS FRESNOS 35, HARLINGEN HIGH 23: At Los Fresnos, the Falcons scored 14 fourth quarter points to break a tie at 21 and win a big 32-6A contest.

Quarterback Pierce Ruiz hit Azul Barrientos on a 12-yard strike and later running back Isaac Moreno scored on a 6-yard run during another drive for Los Fresnos in the final quarter.

The Falcons’ defense did the rest, they forced three fumbles, intercepted a pass and got two big sacks on Harlingen High quarterback Jesse Castro with the Cardinal’s driving late in the fourth quarter.
