There was a bit of a shakeup at the bottom of this week’s RGVSports.com Top 10 poll. San Benito and Brownsville Veterans Memorial make their debut in the 2014 poll while Edcouch-Elsa re-enters after eight weeks.
San Benito and Edcouch-Elsa are tied at 10th. Both teams have turned it on during district play after slow starts. San Benito is coming off a remarkable come-from-behind win over rival Harlingen High to improve to 4-2 overall and — more importantly — is tied for first in District 32-6A at 3-0 with Brownsville Veterans, a team that checks into the poll at No. 9. San Benito and Brownsville Veterans collide at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Edcouch-Elsa, which was ranked No. 9 in RGVSports.com’s preseason poll, also has a big game this week. The Yellowjackets have won four in a row and are tied for first in District 31-5A with rival Mercedes at 3-0. The two teams clash at 7:30 pm. Friday for sole possession of first place. It was also be a battle of two Top 10 teams. Mercedes (5-1) is No. 6 and has won five in a row since losing to Calallen in Week 1.
Weslaco East survived Edinburg Economedes last week and is No. 8. Mission Veterans Memorial beat Roma without its starting quarterback and is No. 7. East is off in Week 8 while Mission Veterans plays host to Sharyland Pioneer.
Port Isabel did not get a first-place vote this week but continues to be the only sub-5A team in the poll. The Tarpons are 6-0 and are No. 5 in the poll. Rio Hondo pays a visit to Port Isabel on Friday.
McAllen High and Edinburg Vela are No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
McAllen High beat McAllen Rowe 63-13 and takes on La Joya Juarez-Lincoln on Friday. Edinburg Vela defeated Pioneer 42-15 and has Valley View on the schedule in Week 8.
McAllen Memorial, which has a bye this week, picked up two first-place votes and is only one point behind No. 1 Sharyland High in the poll. Sharyland received four first-place votes.
Dropping out of the poll were PSJA North and Harlingen High.
