Bloodhounds fall in season finale

STAFF REPORT

Without a few starters on offense, St. Joseph Academy struggled to stop the powerful running game of San Antonio Antonian as the Apaches defeated the Bloodhounds 49-0 on Saturday at Antonian Stadium in San Antonio.

St. Joseph played without quarterbacks Kai Money (shoulder injury) and Connor Pace (broken wrist). Dave Lapeyre got the call under center for the Bloodhounds, but the offense didn’t produce against an Apaches defense that allowed less than 12 points per game this season.

“We had a rough go of it,” St. Josephcoach Christian Putegnat said. “We tried to get things going, but we couldn’t click offensively.”

Antonian ran the ball early and often, much to the dismay of the Bloodhounds’ defense.

“Antonian is similar to Port Isabel’s (run game) that can roll when they need to roll and they did,” Putegnat said. “We had a tough time getting them slowed down.”

After a fast start to the season, St. Joseph struggled throughout district play. Putegnat was upbeat about the Bloodhounds’ potential after the year of experience gained by his young squad.

“A rough end to a pretty good season at the beginning,” he said. “I know these boys are a lot better than they played in the second half of the season. We need to get them back on track.

“The outlook is good. We have to work on our toughness. We just have to work on finishing games. It’s more of a mental note other than a physical one.”
