Lady Chargers move on in volleyball

The Brownsville Veterans Memorial volleyball team made some history, becoming the first team from the school to advance past the area round with a 25-23, 19-25, 25-19, 28 -26 win over of Laredo United on Saturday at Grulla.

“We started off good, we knew they were going to be really aggressive defensively,” Brownsville Veterans coach Lisa Mares said. “I told the girls to match their energy.”

The Lady Chargers’ hitters struggled to be consistent early but found their rhythm.

Mariza Cardenas led the team with 15 kills, Maria Rios had 12 kills and Sarah Sandoval finished with eight kills and 34 digs. Clarissa Chavez had 20 assists, Briana Brown had 19 assists and Krista Lopez added 23 digs for the Lady Chargers.

“Mariza was on fire during the third and fourth games, and my strong hitters were really on,” Mares said. “I think that really carried us to win the game.”

Lady Tarpons’ season ends against Boerne

Port Isabel’s volleyball season ended with 25-10, 25-12, 25-17 loss to Boerne on Saturday at Ingleside.

Boerne used its size advantage to control the nets and ultimately take the game.

“The girls did a really good job, and they fought really hard,” Port Isabel coach Julie Breedlove said. “They were tall. They had some good hitters and the block was always there.”

“Unfortunately we ran out of time. I’m wasreally proud of the way they played.”

Gabby Torres had nine kills and eight digs, and Kelcie Swink had eight kills and five digs to lead the Lady Tarpons.
