Eagle Pass 5, La Joya Palmview 3: At Laredo, the Eagles finally overcame the Lobos in the 11th inning, taking Game 1 of their best-of-three series.

CLASS 5A

Mercedes 3, Mission Veterans Memorial 1: At Mercedes, the Tigers took Game 1 of the best-of-3 series, handing junior ace Noel Vela just his second defeat this season.

Oliver Closner pitched Mercedes to a win and also had a solo home run. The Tigers had not seen a left-handed pitcher much of this season, but found success against Vela.

“We had a lefty pitch to us all week and we put the machine out to simulate his pitching style,” coach Armando Reyes said. “We got some hits a couple of times and we got some breaks offensively. They misplayed some balls and we took advantage.”

Valley View 7, Edcouch-Elsa 3: At Valley View, Aaron Rodriguez struck out eight in five innings to advance the Tigers to the area round of the playoffs with their one-game bi-district win over the Yellowjackets.

Chezzarre Gonzalez went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and pitched two innings of relief, striking out five. Jarod Ornelas went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Valley View improved to 17-8. Edcouch-Elsa finishes its season 12-10.

Edinburg Vela 11, Donna North 3: At Donna, the SaberCats took Game 1 of their series with ease at Donna North.

Roma 4, PSJA High 2: At Roma, the Gladiators took care of their home field by winning Game 1 of their series against the Bears.

CLASS 4A

Orange Grove 6, Hidalgo 5: The Pirates fell in Game 1 of their best-of-three series. Hidalgo led 4-2 after the fourth inning before the Bulldogs rallied. Games 2 and, if necessary, 3 are today in Calallen.
