32-6A notebook: Cardinals hitting stride at right time

The Harlingen Cardinals held on after an 0-2 start, but those days are over after quarterback Bowie Davis returned to the lineup to help lead the Cards over Brownsville Hanna 37-14 Friday night.

It was the first time since the opening week that the Cards were healthy and were executing at their highest level yet.

The Cards scored 28 points before the half and turned in their best game of the season.

Their highest offensive output of the season for an entire game was the 30 points they scored against Weslaco in Week Three.

Davis, who showed some rust, came out passing and completed 9 of 23 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

Meanwhile Leo Tienda had his finest outing of the year, scoring three touchdowns along with 129 yards rushing.

Overall, the Cardinals gained 311 yards of total offense while their defense once again forced multiple turnovers.

The defense has intercepted three passes in the last two games.

The Cardinals look to be finding their stride and head coach Manny Gomez continues to look ahead.

“We came out healthy and that’s the main thing’ you want to come out healthy,” Gomez said Friday. “The kids responded and they did what they had to do to be successful. I’m so proud of these kids — we’re 2-0 and on to the next one.”

SAN BENITO WINNING, BUT NOT SATISFIED: They Greyhounds find themselves 2-0 after getting their second straight win over Los Fresnos 17-14.

The Greyhounds are pleased to continue to win in a tough district, but know the road only gets harder and they must clean up turnovers and penalties.

In their win over Los Fresnos they turned the ball over twice and committed 10 penalties for 90 yards.

“Every week is important that we pick up a win. However, it wasn’t how we’d like to do it because we still had fumbles, and missed assignments,” head coach Dan Gomez said. “Those were the main things that stood out in that game and we’re out here trying to tighten those things up.”

SOUTH GETS BACK IN WIN COLUMN: The Harlingen South Hawks got back in the win column Friday with a win over Brownsville Lopez.

It was their first win since beating Weslaco in the season opener 28-18.

The Hawks scored three second-half touchdowns as they sent the Lobos to 0-5 on the season.

Up next for the Hawks is a Los Fresnos team looking to rebound from their loss to San Benito last week.
